Boyfriend and girlfriend, one of them is the main character whose POV the reader sees. MC believes that they are two halves of a whole, and is very dependent in their relationship. The other one, though, is of a healthier mindset and constantly tries to help MC become more independent. By the end, MC realizes that they are not two halves of a whole. Rather, they are two.
I looked at him, sitting behind the bars, unkempt, staring at the wall. He glanced in my direction, then looked back at the wall. "Tell me, why did you do it?" He chuckled. "Why? Well, it doesn't really matter, does it? I committed the crime, and now I'm paying for it."
